Two versions of Little Red Riding Hood

First up, a dark take on Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf by Tako:

Dark side by ~gtako on deviantART

Next, I don't know it was meant this way, but how about Final Fantasy meets Little Red Riding Hood:

High-res images here and here, and I think the artist has a webcomic here.

Mac vs. PC

I don't think the metaphor quite works, but certainly a creative entry in this Worth 1000 Mac vs. PC Photoshop contest. Snow White and poisoned apple by billbartlett.

Deconstructed Little Red Riding Hood (and more)

You can now see (and purchase) all of the works from the Beyond the Page show at Gallery 1998 in San Francisco. My favorite is still Tin's Poky Little Puppy. But here are two more standouts:

The Cat in the Hat by Jason Limon.

Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf by Ben Strawn.

Web Hooks logo and tag line (link roundup)

I don't know what Web Hooks is, but I like this logo and tag line. Via.

And a few more links:

1. Best use of the "Terminate Me" application? Creating Terminator cats.

2. Classic nursery rhymes updated for the recession. For example:
OK, so Jack and Jill went up the hill, to fetch a pail of water. But, listen, even water is expensive nowadays. So Jack just innocently asked, "Do you really have to wash your hair every night?" Then, of course, they started getting into it, and Jill became pretty damn passive-aggressive, and unnecessarily, I might add. So then Jack fell down—maybe on accident, maybe on purpose—and he broke his crown. And, with no health insurance, they were both shit outta luck.
I have to confess, I often editorialize like this when I'm reading to my boys.

3. A Los Angeles superior court judge kept a lawsuit against Sharon Stone a secret "by accident" until questioned by the LA Times.

4. "[I]f Pakistan collapses, the U.S. military is primed to enter the country and secure as many of those weapons as it can, according to U.S. officials." Via.

Best Covers: DC Comics Solicitations for July 2009

Here's my favorites of the DC Comics solicitations for July 2009 (all links are to the artist's sites):

Mostly for this fellow:

ASTRO CITY: THE DARK AGE BOOK 3 Cover by Alex Ross

NORTH 40 #1 Cover by Fiona Staples, who draws a swell Jabba.

FABLES #86 Cover by Joao Ruas. The vampiric fellow seems to be someone named "Dunster Happ," who has no mention on Google, other than in the solicitation for this issue.

UPDATE: The creepy guy is the creature who lives in the dark. Dunster Happ is essentially a medieval ghostbuster. Probably the best single issue I read this year.

You can see the rest of the DC Comics solicitations for July 2009 here.

Fairy tale-themed art by Anne-Julie Aubry

Lots of Alice in Wonderland, Little Red Riding Hood, and other fairy tale-themed art available as prints, postcards, pocket mirrors, and boxes in Anne-Julie Aubry's Etsy shop:

She also has DS and iPhone skins on sale here:

Beatnik skeleton (link roundup)

"Le Skeleton" sculpture by Jimmy Pickering. Lots more great sculptures and custom toys here - - just start scrolling down.

And a few more links:

1. Three chances to comment and win a copy of "Ad-Boy: Vintage Advertising With Character."

2. 4Chan users not only placed 4Chan founder Moot at the top of a Time 100 most influential people poll, but also manipulated the rest of the people on the list so that the first letter of each name, taken in order, spelled "marble cake, also the game." Via.

3. /Film is hiring a writer.

4. Concept art for a version of Little Red Riding Hood set in the Roman Empire.

There Once Lived a Woman Who Tried to Kill Her Neighbor's Baby

Sam Weber posted some terrific new books covers. First,

There Once Lived a Woman Who Tried to Kill Her Neighbor's Baby: Fairy Tales by Ludmilla Petrushevskaya, available for preorder for $10 at Amazon.

Second,

A cover to a new Cirque Du Freak novel by Darren Shan (which I'm not familiar with). You can see two more Cirque Du Freak covers here.

Japanese folklore/Gene Simmons mashup

Artist Xiaobaosg says:
This illustration is inspired by Japanese folktales , the fight between Ushiwaka ( 牛若丸 ) & Benkei (西塔武蔵坊弁慶 ) at Gōjō Bridge in Kyoto .

I had changed it to a guitar fight and replaced Benkei with Gene Simmons. (from Rock Band, KISS).

*This illustration will be exhibited in FIDI space 台北市武昌街二段89號地下一樓 豪華戲院in89 (Ximen, Taipei) from April 10th to May 3th , 2009 for BU X HI 2 exhibition.

Giant Koi (link roundup)

Giant Koi by Jeremy Enecio. High res at the link. And lots of great fairy tale creatures on display in his portfolio.

And a few more links:

1. Terrific concept art for movies like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Harry Potter at Dermot Power's site. The Attack of the Clones gallery includes images of Asajj Ventress, labeled "Early Sith Concept." Interesting, I just assumed she was created for the first cartoon series.

2. After I put out a call for logo designers, Ken Tango told me about the site Crowdspring - - you post a project and then choose from the logos posted. One of the recent projects was for a pornographer called "Coming Attractions."

3. Graffiti-covered garbage truck.

4. I had a weird trip to the post office the other day. First, the guy who parked next to me drove a hatemobile - - it had "DR H8" vanity plates and was covered in custom graphics advertising some website where you could anonymously send hate-filled emails to people. Second, I unexpectedly received from a publisher a random book called Dump 'Em, which promised to tell me how to break up with anyone. I was afraid someone was sending me a message.

A horror-esque riff on the Little Red Riding Hood myth

Tom Chick describes the game The Path by Tale of Tales as a "horror-esque riff on the Little Red Riding Hood myth" and gives it a rave review.

At the official site, you can download desktop wallpapers like the one you see above, as well as other items like this tear off ad, if you'd like to help advertise the game around town:

And here's the trailer:

They really have their act together - - there's even a store where you can buy "physical souvenirs" including polaroids of the characters. Cosplay, too.

Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens as Prince Phillip and Sleeping Beauty

Here's the cropped version of Annie Leibovitz's latest fairy tale-themed photo for Disney, featuring Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens as Prince Phillip and Princess Aurora from Sleeping Beauty. You can read an interview with the stars as they discuss what it was like being in the photo shoot here. It's exactly as interesting as you suspect.

Here's several more of Leibovitz's photos:

Juliane Moore and Michael Phelps from The Little Mermaid.

Gisele Bundchen as Wendy Darling, Mikhail Baryshnikov as Peter Pan, Tina Fey as Tinker Bell.

Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony as Princess Jasmine and Aladdin.

Whoopi Goldberg as the Genie from Aladdin.

Jessica Biel as Pocahontas.

And you can see six more here.
