3. I greatly enjoyed the first half of David Grann's The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon,
which details the turn of the century adventures of Percy Fawcett as he explored the unforgiving jungles of the Amazon. Grann does a superb job describing a jungle that perversely is both full of life of all sizes that could quickly and painfully kill a man, while at the same time almost bereft of easily obtainable food. But the second half of the book, about Fawcett's last, disastrous adventure, and the miserable and penniless wife he left behind, was drudgery to complete. And the ending of the book, devoted to lamenting the loss of jungle to modern progress, is laughable in light of all the time Grann spent explaining that the Amazon is hell on Earth.
