Starcrash

Yesterday I posted a poster from what I thought was Turkish Star Wars. But Simon pointed out that it was actually from Starcrash:
Starcrash (original Italian title Scontri stellari oltre la terza dimensione, literally "stellar clashes beyond the third dimension") is an Italian 1979 science fiction film, which was also released under the English title of The Adventures of Stella Star (in the US). The screenplay was written by Luigi Cozzi (pen name Lewis Coates)[1] and Nat Wachsberger, and Cozzi also directed the film. The cast included Marjoe Gortner, Caroline Munro, Robert Tessier, Christopher Plummer, and David Hasselhoff.[2] The film score is by Oscar winning composer John Barry ("Midnight Cowboy", "Goldfinger", "Somewhere in Time", "Dances with Wolves").
The trailer is absolutely fantastic and in addition to lightsabers and bikini babes (including Caroline Munro from one of the Sinbad movies), seems to feature Ray Harryhausen's Talos from Jason and the Argonauts.

You can buy posters (and promotional photos of Munro) at eBay, and the DVD at Amazon.

Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn

Rob Bricken is running a Best/Worst Nerdy Birthday Stories contest at Topless Robot, which reminded me of one of my favorite birthday parties - - seeing Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn with a bunch of friends.

(Turkish poster)

IMDB
offers this description:
A seeker named Dogen rescues Dhyana [Kelly Preston] after her father is murdered by the evil Jared-Syn. To avenge her father's death, Dogen must find Jared-Syn's hideout in the mysterious "Lost City", but the only person who knows where it is an aging, burned-out seeker named Rhodes. Along the way, they will need to do battle against the hunter Baal and his Cyclopean minions for engaging Jared-Syn in a final encounter.
It featured impressive laser effects:

I thoroughly enjoyed the Star Wars-ification of Star Trek

I finally got to see Star Trek last night, and give it an enthusiastic thumbs up. I thoroughly enjoyed the Star Wars-ification of the classic series. Let's see,

1. Farm boy goes into space,
2. never met his dad,
3. lusts for the starring woman only to find out she's interested in someone else,
4. and lands on a hostile world without means of leaving, and is rescued by a wizened old sage who essentially knows magic.

Am I missing any other glaring similarities?

5. Oh, the plot is the heroes have to destroy a gigantic planet-destroying spaceship and they do so first by going onto the ship and escaping it, and then launching a weapon from close range.

But aside from the terrible looking ice monsters which really should have been edited out, possibly the silliest interior design of a spaceship ever, and minor quibbles with the plot, Star Trek was a terrific movie. I'm so glad I managed to avoid knowing in advance much more than it involved Spock and time travel.

The future cop was cool, too:

Best album cover ever?

This is Akiko Yano and a dolphin on the cover of her album from 1977 called "Iroha Ni Konpeitou." You can see the track listing here or buy a copy from Amazon Japan. There's lots of Akiko Yano videos at YouTube, but I didn't spot any that involved dolphin wrestling. Via this Cheesy Vinyl Flickr gallery.

And this isn't the only bizarre cover featuring a dolphin that I saw today. I present Robert Merle's "Day of the Dolphin"

The book is apparently a satire about a dolphin trained to sabotage a ship transporting the president of the US. Even better, it was a movie:

I couldn't find a video clip, but here's a Simpsons parody inspired by the film's name:

I found one copy of the book with this cover at eBay. There's several original Day of the Dolphin posters on sale for under $30 at Movieposters.com. And the dvd is $6.50 at Amazon.
