Starting and ending the day with rainbows

Today was my last day on vacation (if being away from home with two kids under five can be called a vacation). The day started and ended with rainbows. The late afternoon rainbow was actually a double-rainbow, and so vibrant that it seemed tangible.

It had been ages since I last visited Hanauma Bay. Used to be, you'd buy food at the beach and then hand feed fish right at the water's edge. Now, there's wind and solar powered street lights (those things hanging down were turning with the wind), and a solar-powered trash compacting garbage can. You also have to watch a nine-minute movie about reef preservation before they'll allow you step on the beach.

Also, I passed a repo store with a bear in the window.

Paul Bunyan centaur (link roundup)

And a few more links:

1. This can't possibly be real. Willie Brown (a longtime California politician) says of a recent party:
I went to an unbelievable dinner party at Charlotte and George Shultz's penthouse Monday night for retired Army Gen. Eric Shinseki, the new secretary of veterans affairs.

The party was a Stanlee Gatti tour de force, complete with fatigue-wearing servers, camouflage table cloths, extras dressed up as snipers and a full Marine color guard and band.

It was like being in Afghanistan.

All this for about a dozen guests. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger was there with his wife, Maria Shriver. Gavin Newsom was there with Jennifer, and boy is she showing.

1. Fox football reporter Jay Glazer also has a business training pro football players. And says he's turning Matt Leinart from a pretty boy into a killer.

2. The Lear Jet Repo Man:
All commercial and private planes were grounded, but Nick Popovich wasn't one to turn down a job. So he waited for the storm to clear long enough to charter a Hawker jet from Chicago into South Carolina. There was just one detail: No one had told Popovich about the heavily armed white supremacist militia that would be guarding the aircraft when he arrived.
