Video of Randy George perfoming Daft Punk's "Something About Us" with a DS and a theremin

Aside from the fact that "Something About Us" is one of my favorite songs, it's fascinating to watch Randy George play the theremin. Wikipedia explains:
A theremin is unique among musical instruments in that it is performed without being touched by the operator. The musician stands in front of the instrument and moves his or her hands in the proximity of two metal antennas. The distance from one antenna determines frequency (pitch), and the distance from the other controls amplitude (volume). Most frequently, the right hand controls the pitch and the left controls the volume, although some performers reverse this arrangement. Additionally, some theremins use a volume dial and have only one antenna.

Walmart takes another step toward saving the planet (Gore counts his money on his mega-yacht)

Hewlett-Packard won Walmart's Home Entertainment Design Challenge for a new packaging scheme for its Pavilion dv6929 notebook. Instead of selling consumers a laptop contained in a giant box full of styrofoam, Walmart will sell the new HP laptop in a messenger bag. Making the move will eliminate a huge amount of wasted cardboard and styrofoam, and the reduction in packing materials will also allow Walmart to eliminate one out of every four trucks needed to deliver the computers to the store. You can read a bit more here and here. Via.

Now if the messenger bag is the type that's been ok'd by TSA, I'll be really impressed.

The Mythbusters fire 1100 paintguns simultaneously to instantly paint the Mona Lisa

Wow. The Mythbusters were hired by Nvidia to demonstrate how its new processor was superior to other processors.

Now that's how you advertise a product in the internet age. Relatedly, here's Adam Savage explaining that Mythbusters wanted to do a show exposing how hackable rfid tags were, but Texas Instruments, Visa, and the other credit card companies pressured the Discovery Channel into killing the show:

*Update: Or maybe Adam Savage is a blowhard who should be viewed with a heavy dose of skepticism in the future.

Slate reporter finds out how easy it would be to help Russia's cyber attack against Georgia

Hearing reports that many crucial Georgian websites were knocked out by cyber attacks, Evgeny Morozov became curious as to whether those attacks were necessarily part of a sophisticated, organized, government assault. The answer: No. In just one hour, Morozov (not a sophisticated hacker) acquired multiple software programs for launching denial of service attacks, instructions for using the programs, and websites directing him to useful targets. You can read about his investigation here. Via.

All in all, Russia did the US and the world a favor in launching this attack. It's a good reminder for everyone as to what countries are a danger to the world.
