Here's how to save Heroes

The first three episodes or so this season of Heroes were great. But the writers seem to have run out of ideas (and have now been fired). Most noticeably, the last three episodes have each featured a different hero fake dying to fool a villain (Ando, Claire, Parkman). Pathetic. Entertainment Weekly suggested some minor tweaks that would only stop the bleeding at best. Here's my bold suggestions for saving the franchise.
1. Copy BPRD: There are too many unfocused, aimless heroes running around. Create a small team along the lines of Mignola's BPRD, and have them encounter mysteries every week. Make HRG and Sylar the core of the team and add two (hot) women. Like the X-Files, episodes should vary between self-contained stories, and a larger mystery.
2. Kill off Dad Petrelli: At the moment he dies, all of the powers he stole should flow back to their rightful owners. BPRD's main mission is to find all of those people and deal with the problems they cause. One episode could feature a reanimated Adam Monroe. Another could feature a mass-murdering Maya. Most importantly, the heroes act intelligently and logically to solve problems. They don't keep coming up with silly reasons to not use their powers.
3. Make a mutated Suresh the main bad guy: The Fly meets Doctor Doom. He blames the heroes for his condition and uses his science skills to cause trouble. He could reproduce, creating mutated monsters.
4. Keep Hiro, Ando, Nathan around solely as supporting players: Hiro funds the team. Nathan is a government contact. These guys have otherwise outlived their usefullness to the show.
5. Say goodbye to Claire (lame, directionless character, and she's just not attractive enough to attract an audience); Parkman (useless); and Peter (grown stale, although I enjoy watching his silly "I'm a tough guy" walk).
6. No powers that need to be explained through dialogue: Massive strength is ok. A character who has to say every episode (in the heat of battle) "I'm getting strong because you're afraid" is not ok.
There's my two cents. In the meantime, I now have an hour of extra free time each week.

Win a Little Britain USA Mimobot
Little Britain USA is a spinoff of a British television show called Little Britain. It will air on HBO Sundays at 10:30 p.m. beginning September 28 (after Entourage), and reair Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. In addition to stars Matt Lucas and David Walliams, upcoming episodes will feature Rosie O'Donnell, Vivica A. Fox, Paul Rudd, and Sting. Here's the show's official site, which includes ecards, desktop wallpapers, a screensaver and more. And here's Little Britain USA's Wikipedia entry.
In this review at USA Today, Robert Bianco sums up: "Think of Monty Python with fewer people, even more drag, and latex fat suits, and you'll get the idea behind the marvelously talented Matt Lucas and David Walliams' comedy revue."
This video clip shows Walliams as Carol Beer
The marketing push for the show has been impressive and has included tv and radio appearances and some limited edition Mimobots designed by Cornerstone.

The Mimobots won't be sold in stores, but I have one to give away. For a chance to win, just post a comment below. Make sure your comment either includes your email or is linked to a Blogger profile that includes an email so that I can contact you if you win. The contest ends Friday October 3 at 8:00 p.m. Pacific Standard Time.

Han Solo Frozen in Carbonite desk
There are some incredible furniture creations on display at Tom Spina Designs.

No price is listed for the Han Solo in Carbonite desk.

But the Galactic Throne sells for $5500.
Via i09, which also posts concept art for some Death Star-inspired buildings to be built in Dubai and Baku.
Also at i09, hard to believe, but that guy who made that unwatchable web series that got so much press is finding it a little tougher to play with the big boys on network tv.

Finally, someone who is going to be affected by the switch to digital tv

A quick recap: 2/17/09, all television signals in the USA will switch to digital, so anyone using a regular antenna to watch tv won't be able to watch tv after that, unless they install a converter. There are lots of ads on tv about this, and they've always struck me as silly since the move to digital won't affect people with cable.
Today, I finally learned of an entire class of people that it will affect: prisoners who have televisions, but no cable connection.
The government is subsidizing the cost of the converters for anyone who needs to buy one, except people living in prisons. Potentially a very big problem, since tv is key to keeping the peace in prisons. You can read a bit more here. Via. (Photo link.)

McCain or Obama: Favorite tv shows
"I think M*A*S*H was probably my favorite. [My wife's] favorite is The Dick Van Dyke Show, which she sometimes now watches [in reruns]. I have to say The Dick Van Dyke Show ranks right up there.''...
'There are shows [my wife and I] agree on. We like the reruns of Seinfeld. I really like Curb Your Enthusiasm. I kind of like Dexter, too, although it certainly has a macabre side to it. I'll tell you that [my wife] likes Big Love — I haven't watched it much, but she enjoys that. And I like The Wire a lot, too. That's a great show.''

NY Times unimpressed with Ted Allen's new Food Network show

You can call it the Ted Allen Rule, though it could also be the Carson Kressley Rule or the Thom Filicia Rule: the best qualification for being a reality host or judge is having been a reality host or judge, especially if you’re gay.

Jackie Johnson interview (post for my favorite reader)
My wife and I try to catch the weather forecast before bed, usually from Jackie Johnson on KCAL 9. My wife often comments on her belts and she's not the only one to notice. Here's part of an interview from a blog called Soup Cans, which scored an interview with Jackie:
If you're not from LA, here's Jackie in action:

We're obsessed with the outfits you wear each night during your broadcasts, mostly your impressive collection of belts. Where do you like to shop in LA?
Thank you very much! I am very flattered! I have seen your "Jackie Johnson Fashion Watch" and have to admit a few times before getting ready for work I thought to myself "What would Soup Cans say?"
The wonderful thing about LA is there are so many places to shop! I wish I had one particular store, that would make it much easier. I enjoy being outdoors so my favorite shopping is walking down Melrose/Robertson and in Santa Monica. Oh, and my friend also sells clothes so I am able to get great deals, thank goodness!
And yes, I do wear a lot of belts...my mom always told me they make the outfit look "finished."
