Last week, federal drug regulators proposed stark new warnings for cigarette packages to scare smokers straight, including one showing a toe tag on a corpse. Once again, a familiar issue was engaged: where to draw the line between our freedom to damage ourselves and the role of government to protect us. What if different food products also had to warn consumers about their damaging, if less lethal, effects?
