A quick recap: 2/17/09, all television signals in the USA will switch to digital, so anyone using a regular antenna to watch tv won't be able to watch tv after that, unless they install a converter. There are lots of ads on tv about this, and they've always struck me as silly since the move to digital won't affect people with cable.
Today, I finally learned of an entire class of people that it will affect: prisoners who have televisions, but no cable connection.
The government is subsidizing the cost of the converters for anyone who needs to buy one, except people living in prisons. Potentially a very big problem, since tv is key to keeping the peace in prisons. You can read a bit more here. Via. (Photo link.)
