John Carter art by Aaron Miller.

And a few more links:

1. Meet Lindsey Vonn Out, American skier:
Her trainer, former Austrian National Ski Team conditioning coach Martin Hager, pricks the lobes of Vonn's ears several times a day and squeezes out a drop of blood. A wee device instantly calculates her body chemistry to measure exertion and hydration.
2. Giant Robot wants $60,000 in donations so they can publish six issues in 2010. Eric Nakamura responds to people questioning the move in the comments here. (Now that they've raised $10k, I wonder what they'll do with the money if they don't make it all the way to $60k.)

3. I live in Los Angeles yet somehow completely missed this: "The air acrobat who fell three stories during a Christmas performance at the Beverly Center spent seven weeks in a wheelchair with numerous broken bones."

January Art Contest: John Carter of Mars

This month's art theme is John Carter of Mars, which is currently being turned into a film by Wall-E director Andrew Stanton. In a nutshell, it's a swashbuckling space opera featuring a southern gentleman, four-armed green aliens, and a super hot Martian princess.

To enter, simply email me your John Carter of Mars-inspired work of art by 8:00 p.m. California time on Sunday January 31, 2010. Drawings, custom toys, sculptures, and photographs are all welcome. The best creation will win a $100 Threadless store credit. And I will also give a $25 store credit to one randomly chosen participant. You may send as many entries as you'd like, and this contest is open regardless of where you live. No nudity, please.

Here's some inspiration:

Pulp-style art by Erik Evans for Pixar.

Two of four custom action figures by Bruce Ross.
